Common myths about contact lenses – what’s actually true

Contact lenses are a safe and comfortable option for those who want the freedom to see clearly without glasses. Still, there are many myths that discourage people from trying lenses. As an optician, I often encounter these questions, and it is important to separate facts from misconceptions.

A common myth is that contact lenses are uncomfortable or painful to use. In reality, most of today’s lenses are both soft and moisturizing, which makes them very comfortable for the vast majority of users. It may take a few days to get used to them, but pain is not normal – if you experience it, you should always contact your optician.

Another misconception is that contact lenses damage the eyes in the long run. When lenses are used according to your optician’s recommendations and with proper hygiene, they are completely safe. It is, however, important to follow the instructions for cleaning and storage, as poor care can lead to infections or irritation. Properly fitted lenses and regular check-ups with your optician contribute to good comfort and eye health.

Many also believe that you cannot wear contact lenses if you have astigmatism or other vision problems. That is not true – today there are lenses that correct most types of refractive errors, including astigmatism and presbyopia. Your optician can help you find the right type of lens for your needs.

Another common myth is that lenses are expensive in the long run. While there is a cost for lenses, many are surprised at how affordable they can be. It largely depends on the type of lens that needs to be fitted and how often you plan to use your lenses.

Finally, some believe that contact lenses require extremely advanced care. The fact is that modern lenses are designed to be easy to use, with clear instructions and products that simplify maintenance and hygiene.

In short – many myths about contact lenses are based on old experiences or misunderstandings. As an optician, I want to encourage anyone who is curious to try lenses to talk to their optician. With proper guidance, the right fitting, and good care, contact lenses can provide great comfort, freedom, and sharp vision every day.
